Newark School Malta is currently participating in a science project called InNATURE. The main aim of this project is to educate both students and teachers alike about biomimicry and how humans can be inspired by nature. Biomimicry is all around us and the students found numerous examples of everyday items which were influenced by nature, such as helmets and glue which were inspired by hedgehogs and geckos respectively.
A toolkit was developed at the start of the project and a lesson presentation, a teacher’s worksheet and a student worksheet were created for every activity. This helped the teachers adapt the lessons according to the needs of the students whilst incorporating the activities into the school curriculum. Students in Years 5, 6, and 7 participated in the piloting phase of this project. When analysing the evaluation forms which were filled in after each activity, it was concluded that the majority of students would like to carry out other activities found in the toolkit.
The students enjoyed doing the experiments and working in groups albeit whilst following all Covid-19 regulations.
